About ECGPS

About ECGPS and Elections for 2012-2013:

ECGPS Background

After forming a partnership student government with the University of Iowa Student Government (UISG), the undergraduate student government, ECGPS became a completely autonomous governing body in early 2009.  In March, 2009, ECGPS subsequently received the authority to allocate graduate and professional student funds from the Student Activity Fee, an account that all students contribute to each year to enrich life here on campus.

Your ECGPS Today

Today, ECGPS represents nearly 10,000 University of Iowa graduate and professional students. ECGPS operates in collaboration with UISG, the administration, and our member governments. Our priority is to support graduate and professional academics, scholarship, public service, and enhance the quality of life. It’s your future, and our mission.

Who is Eligible to Run for a Leadership Position?

Only member government delegates or alternate delegates or people who have held the office of President, Vice President or Executive Officer positions within ECGPS are eligible to be elected to the President, Vice President and Executive Officer positions.

Eligibility for President alternates between graduate and professional students each year. This year a candidate running for President must be a professional student and a candidate running for Vice President must be a graduate student to be eligible. The candidate running for President is not also eligible for the Vice President position.

All other leadership positions are open to any graduate or professional students. However, if you are interested in running for GPAC Chair, you may not be a Delegate.

How Can I be Considered for a Leadership Position? The Nominations Process

Each candidate for a leadership position must be nominated. Candidates may nominate themselves for any position. Each position is for a 1-year term. No application needs to be completed, just a nomination.

You may begin submitting your nominations for candidates or for yourself beginning Tuesday, March 20th. All nominations must be submitted no later than Tuesday, April 17th by 5:00 pm to be considered for a leadership position. Please submit all nominations to the ECGPS President, Kelli Todd, at kelli-todd@uiowa.edu Please include the candidate's first and last name and if the candidate is a graduate or professional student in the email.

Nominations will be posted on the ECGPS website as they are submitted.

When and Where Will the Elections be Held?

Elections for all positions will be held during our council meeting on Tuesday, April 24rd. The meeting will begin at 7:30 pm in the Executive Board Room of the Old Capitol Mall (on the 2nd floor northwest side of the building above T-Spoons). If elected, all positions begin their 1-year term on the Monday following finals week in the spring semester.

Each candidate will be given the opportunity to give a 3 minute speech prior to the election of that position. Following the speech, the ECGPS body may ask the candidate questions for a period not to exceed 10 minutes. After each candidate has had the opportunity to give a speech and answer questions, the candidate will be asked to step outside of the room while each ECGPS voting member votes.

Results of each election for each leadership position will be made public prior to proceeding with the election of the next leadership position.

A candidate interested in running for multiple leadership positions may give 1 speech and will receive 1 question and answer session for each position that the candidate is running for. A candidate cannot be elected to more than 1 leadership position. The candidate that receives the majority vote will assume the leadership role.

What are you waiting for?! There is no University without U!

We look forward to receiving your nomination and accepting the challenge!
